HoMeMaDe BBQ SaUcE

Make your own Homemade BBQ Sauce in less than 30 minutes! Perfect recipe for the 4th of July and summer months.

My last blog was dedicated to a  great macaroni salad...but you cannot have a great mac salad without a delicious BBQ!  It is officially summer and with the 4th of July right around the corner I thought this would be the perfect recipe to share with all of my readers.  It is a recipe for Homemade BBQ Sauce. YUM!

Cooking on the grill is something we do almost every week at our home during the summer months.  For many reasons we are choosing to eat less meat and therefore we grill meat about one time per week.  We always use meat from Pat's Pastured, a local farm in East Greenwich that I highly recommend.  http://www.patspastured.com/ You can check out the site to see what they are all about and where they sell.  If you are going to choose to eat meat in your family then you should choose wisely.  If you have never watched Food, Inc, check out the East Greenwich Free Library and rent the movie for free for 1 week.  It will make you want to ONLY eat meat from a farm like Pat's.  Yes, you can buy organic meat from Whole Foods or other grocery stores...but do you really want your meat coming from Argentina?!?!  I think NOT!  Why would you do that when you can get delicious pasture-raised meat from right down the road? Although I could go on and on talking about the ever important issue regarding meat, I must get to the recipe I promised you!

My family will love me extra tonight because I will be grilling ribs and chicken from Pat's and using my finger-licking-good HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE!  This sauce has the perfect flavors for any palate...as the sauce is perfect...not too sweet...not too anything...just good! This sauce can be used for so much.  We have used it for ribs, chicken, sloppy joes, and pulled pork sandwiches! The sauce will last for 3 weeks after you make it.

Tip: You can also give this BBQ Sauce away as gifts.  Just be sure to cool before pouring into mason jars.  Store in refrigerator immediately and it will last for 3 weeks!

HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE

*try to use organic ingredients if possible

*this recipe makes about 3 cups of sauce...I usually double it to have leftovers!

Ingredients

-1 bunch of fresh thyme tied together with kitchen twine

-2 TBS olive oil

-1/2 onion, diced

-2 garlic cloves, minced

-2 cups ketchup ($1.99 at trader joes..organic of course!)

-1/4 cup brown sugar

-1/4 cup molasses

-2 TBS red wine vinegar

-1 TBS dry mustard

-1 tsp ground cumin

-1 tsp smoked paprika

-crank of freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat olive oil over medium heat and add thyme bunch. Cook slowly for 3 minutes.

2. Add onion and garlic and cook for a few minutes until onions are soft....but be sure not to burn garlic (may need to turn heat to medium-low).

3. Add all the rest of the ingredients and give the sauce a stir. Turn down to low and cook slowly (stirring occasionally) for 20 minutes. You may need to loosely cover to avoid splatters.

4. Discard thyme.

5. ENJOY!
