Avengers Bearded the Lions in their Den

My first thought as the Avengers came off the football field Saturday night wasn’t that they were 5:0 for the season, but rather – “boy am I happy not to be one of the parents having to wash those filthy uniforms”.    The Lincoln field was a mess by the end of the game and I can only imagine the mud-bath it would have been if the game had been Friday night as originally scheduled!

It was a long night of unsuccessful drives ending in punts and turnovers on downs for both the Avengers and the Lions.  The 1st quarter saw strong defense on both sides of the ball.  EG went for a field goal that was no good, however a penalty against the Lions allowed Bret Estes a successful second chance, leaving the score 3-0.  The Avengers scored again in the 2nd quarter on a short run by Carney Crawford, but the conversion kick by Estes failed leaving EG with a 9:0 lead at the half.

The 3rd quarter saw another back and forth battle, but no additional points.  Miner’s 35-yard pass to Cam Rocke a few minutes into the 4th resulted in a touchdown, but once again no score on the PAT.   Once again, I missed the shot of Cam making the catch – there always seems to be an official or some other big body in my way.  It’s my goal to get Cam in action at least once this season!

Lincoln finally scored with less than 3 minutes on the clock on a 40-yard pass from Dan Escobar to Thaddeus Moss.   Is there a position Moss didn’t play in this game?  If so I missed it! The Lions made a two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper by Escobar.   The Avengers ran down the clock, leaving the field with a 15:8 win.

The Avengers now lead Division III with a 5:0 record overall, 3:0 within in the division.  They next play the Moses Brown Quakers, who are 2:2 overall and 2:1 in the division.
