Avengers End Season With 6-6 Record

Moving the traditional Thanksgiving Game to Wednesday night left the EGHS football team facing the Narragansett Mainers in windy and rainy conditions.  As the game went on, temperatures dropped and the game seemed to slow down to a snail’s pace with only the most die-hard fans left in the stands by the end of the game.  Despite the 22-13 loss, the Avengers have a lot to be proud of.  They are a terrific group of student athletes supported by great coaches, staff, and of course their families.

The Avenger offense dominated on the first drive, burning down the clock ending with a 3-yard running touchdown by Carney Crawford with a little less than 4 minutes left in the quarter.  Brett Estes point after attempt didn’t make it through the goal posts.  The Mainers fumbled their punt return, allowing EG to recover the ball at the 50-yard line.  Unable to advance the ball, EG turned over the ball on downs leaving the 1st quarter with a 6-0 lead.  Narragansett countered with a running touchdown by Deontae Stanley, followed by a successful point by Christian Humulock.

The Avengers came back with a touchdown by Cam Rocke and a successful PAT from Estes.  With 3 minutes left in the half, the Mariners Stanley made another touchdown, moving on to make a successful 2-point conversion by Michael Gallagher.  EG fumbled the punt return, allowing the Mariners to take back the ball.  The Avengers intercepted a later pass, but ran out of time leaving Narragansett with a 15-13 lead at the half.

Narragansett dominated in the second half, with a touchdown by Vincent Santos and the PAT by Humulock.  At that point, the story was turnovers on downs, punts, and a recurrence of heavy rain and wind.  The Mariners walked away with a much needed 22-13 win, allowing them to advance to playoffs.
