Today’s game had plenty of sacks, penalties, and a quite a few dust-ups when the Avengers traveled to Ponaganset to face the Chieftans, but points on the scoreboard were few and far between. The refs were another factor in today's game, throwing flag-after-flag and tossing out several warnings to the sidelines. Another good-sized EG crowd took the time out to cheer on the Avengers on the warm & breezy afternoon, along with the Avenger cheerleaders.
The 1st quarter was a back and forth battle with the Chieftans sacking QB Andrew Miner on the fourth drive. EG’s offense didn’t score until 13 seconds were left on the clock, with a touchdown by Dillan White and a successful PAT from Brett Estes. The 2nd quarter saw interceptions by both the Avengers and the Chieftans, followed by a successful Chieftan field goal from Kyle Courttemanche, bringing the score to 7:3 Avengers.
The Avengers came back about half-way through the 3rd quarter on a running play touchdown by White, but the extra point kick fell short leaving the score 13:3 where it stayed for the rest of the game. The third quarter saw two more sacks and a Chieftan interception of a long Avenger pass. The final quarter started off with a Chieftan fumble recovered by EG’s Alex Rocke. Carney Crawford drew two dead-ball fouls on the same play, pushing the Avengers back from a potential scoring opportunity. The last significant play of the game was by EG’s AJ Turchetta, who sacked the Chieftan quarterback. The Avengers ran down the clock, not leaving the Chieftans enough time to make something happen, giving EG the win.
The Avengers take on Tiverton at home on Carcieri Field this Friday, September 27th at 7pm.
