Avengers Scuttle the Exeter/West Greenwich Scarlet Knights in Football Season Opener

When the Avengers opened up their regular season Friday night, we were once again on the sidelines taking pics. There was a good-sized hometown crowd, the band was playing, and there were quite a few EG students in the stands cheering on Andrew, Carney, and the rest of the team. The night was perfect for football and it was great to see the team walk away with a 34-17 win against the Exeter/West Greenwich Scarlet Knights.

It does feel a little different when your own kid isn’t on the field.  I didn’t have the same anxiety about whether the team would win, or whether it was my kid not getting up after a rough play.  It was nice to get a big hug from one of former Duncan’s classmates and talk about getting a group together for football and chicken wings over Columbus Day weekend.

The 1st quarter was a grind on both sides of the ball, ending with an empty scoreboard.  The Avenger offense came back on the first drive in the 2nd quarter with a touchdown by Cam Rocke and an extra point by Brett Estes.  EWG was able to get close enough for a successful field goal by Ian Geyer.  Carney Crawford got his hands on the ball and ran in for another touchdown, followed by another point by Estes leaving the score 14:3 at the half.

EWG scored on a short run by Jacob Hornoff, with another 2 points from a successful conversion by Dustin VanLuven.  The Avengers came back just a minute left in the quarter with a touchdown run by Crawford and a successful PAT from Estes.  There was a terrific interception by EG’s Michael Massella with no seconds on the clock, leaving the Avengers with the ball at the start of the 4th quarter.

EG took advantage of the momentum with another Crawford running touchdown seconds into the quarter, although the PAT attempt wasn’t successful.  EWG came back with a long pass that was intercepted by Crawford, who was tripped up short of the goal line. Massella scored on a pass from Andrew Miner and Estes made another point, leaving the score 34:11.  The Knight’s offense seemed to get a bit of a second wind towards the end of the quarter with the final touchdown of the game by Dwight Anderson leaving the score EG 34, EWG 17.

The Avengers travel to face the Ponaganset Chieftains at Ponaganset High School on Saturday, September 21st for a 12pm game.
