Avengers Trip Up Tiverton Tigers for 3rd Season Win
The night was perfect for football – clear & crisp with just the right hint of fall in the air. Unfortunately, a late night at work meant I missed the 1st half of Friday’s game against the Tiverton Tigers. The Avengers were just leaving the field at the half with a 21:0 lead on the board. Another great group of fans were in the stands, ready to let me know that the 1st quarter had all the action … two touchdowns by Carney Crawford and a terrific interception by Andrei Stancu, who ran the ball in for a third touchdown. Brett Estes made three successful PATs.
The Tigers got past EG’s defense about 3 minutes into the 2nd half with a touchdown by Ryan Costa, but no extra point. EG quarterback Andrew Miner came back with a long touchdown pass to Cam Rocke, followed by another Estes point leaving the score 28:6. The 4th quarter had four strong drives, kicked off by another touchdown pass to Rocke and the extra point from Estes. The Tigers nearly made it to the goal-line, but lost the ball to an interception by Nick Andreozzi resulting in a touchback. The Avengers, unable to convert on fourth down, punted the ball back to Tiverton. A last burst of energy from the Tigers resulted in a touchdown by Matt DeLeo. They kept the momentum going with a successful 2-point conversion by Costa closing the final score to 35:14.
Head up to Lincoln High School on Friday October 4th at 7pm when the Avengers look to advance their season record to 4:0.
