Avengers Unable to Get Past Purples

The EGHS Avenger varsity football team has had a rough couple of weeks, with losses to Moses Brown, NK, and last week’s 0-46 shutout by Mount Pleasant.  Things looked better for the team last night, when the Avengers were in the hunt for the entire game against the Classical Purples.

The 1st quarter started off with a successful field goal by the Purples.  EG came back with a touchdown by Carney Crawford and a successful PAT by Brett Estes.  Classical countered with a touchdown by Tim Shea, who also made a successful point after attempt leaving the score 7-10 going into the 2nd quarter.  Classical added to their score with a touchdown by Olusegun Vadis, but no points after.  The Avengers saw a pass intercepted, but were able to come back on their next drive with a pass to Mike Massella, who ran in for a touchdown leaving the score 13-16 Classical at the half.

The Avengers came back with momentum in the 3rd quarter, starting off by intercepting a Classical pass.  A long throw from QB Andrew Miner to Cam Rocke resulted in a touchdown, followed by an extra point from Estes giving the Avengers a 20-16 lead.   The 4th quarter started with touchdown by Classical’s Vadis and a 2 point conversion by Amos Kpanan.  The Avengers battled throughout the rest of the game to get back on the board.  The crowd held its breath when EG’s Cam Rock caught a long pass, but was pushed out of bounds just before the end zone.  The strong effort wasn’t enough, leaving Classical with a 20-24 win.
