"Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money"

Attorney Mike Bottaro has a song stuck in his head that really is not about lawyers.

I heard the Warren Zevon classic 'Lawyers, Guns and Money" while waiting in line recently and cannot get the chorus out of my head.  I think its kind of ironic being a lawyer and all, although the song really has nothing to do with law.  I decided to google it and here is what I found....

It was the closing track on 1978's "Excitable Boy." The songs from that album became instant classics with heavy radio play, and the soundtrack of a time before we worried so much--when reckless misadventures somehow always turned out all right and made for a good story in the end.

Zevon explained in the clip above that "while on vacation in Hawaii, I wrote this song late one night on wet cocktail napkins after a long day of improbable and grotesque mischief. Obviously, I survived all that, but I learned something from the experience: I never take vacations.”

Another story is that the chorus is from a trip to Cuba with his manager.  Their cab driver had a run-in with kidnappers and as they jump back into the cab and take off, Zevon turned to his manager and says, "Call my Dad and ask him to send some lawyers," to which the manager added, "And some guns and money, too."

I doubt there are many of you who can quote the rest of the lyrics. But that one urgent plea burrows its way into your brain and stays there.  Anyone know more about this song?

Mike Bottaro is a Rhode Island personal injury lawyer who would try to help Mr. Zevon if called.
