Obituary: Charles J. Winkler

Charlie, a WWII Coast Guard veteran, loved boating and was a member of both the Rhode Island and East Greenwich yacht clubs.


Charles J. Winkler, 96, passed away Sept. 4, 2012. He was the husband of late Marion K. (Staeheli) Winkler. Born in Exeter, N.H., he was a son of the late John and Dora (Graney) Winkler. He lived in Warwick.

Mr. Winkler was a salesman for J.P. Stevens and Kingston Turf. He was a WWII Coast Guard veteran and was one of the last surviving crew members of the S.S. Normandie which sank in Manhattan in 1942. Charlie loved boating and was a member of the Rhode Island and East Greenwich Yacht clubs and the US Power Squadron. He was a Rotarian for over 55 years and a Paul Harris Fellow.

He is survived by his companion of 22 years Beatrice Scolnick, four children; Paul A., Eric A., Thomas W. and Barbara M. Winkler, seven grandchildren and was the brother of the late Robert Winkler and Margaret Leavitt.

He was blessed with many caregivers notably; Peter, Susan and Andrew Quackenbush.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine's Church, 3252 Post Rd., in Warwick. Burial will be private. Calling hours: Friday 4 to 8 p.m. in the , 822 Main St., East Greenwich.
