Obituary: Dorothy Louise (Babin) Herchen, 96

Born in Cambridge, Mass., on May 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William and Elise (Gaudet) Babin, and sister of the late Ruth Babin and William Babin, Jr. Dot moved at an early age to Providence, where she was raised. She was a graduate of Classical High School, Class of 1935, and Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1938, as a Registered Nurse. Dot worked as a nurse at the Jane Brown Hospital, and did private-duty nursing while raising her family.Dot was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed doing cross-stitch needle work and knitting. She was also an avid reader. For the past five years Dot resided comfortably at the Seasons Assisted Living Facility in East Greenwich. She was a long-time communicant of Saint Gregory the Great Church.

Dot is survived by her six children, Carol Gibbons of Kingston; Catherine Dumican and husband Barry, of Cape Cod, Mass.; Roberta Herchen of Warwick; Stephen Herchen and wife Jennifer of Plymouth, Mass.; Paul Herchen, and wife Joyce of West Warwick; and Elise Hedglen and husband Ken of Wakefield; 20 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m. in Saint Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Dot’s memory may be made to Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island, 70 Bath Street, Providence, R.I. 02908, would be deeply appreciated.
