Obituary: Gary P. Halliwell, 62

He loved his family and constantly showed that love in his unselfish and caring ways.

Gary P. Halliwell, 62, a lifelong resident of East Greenwich, Block Island and Narragansett Bay, passed peacefully on Thursday surrounded by his family and friends after a long and heroic battle with cancer.

Born in Providence, he attended East Greenwich High School, Franklin Pierce College and the University of South Florida. Following his formal education he worked with Phillips Lillibridge in the family real estate firm, JWS Lillibridge, and continued a successful career there until he was recruited to join his father and brother in their consulting firm, Halliwell Engineering Associates. Over his 30 year career at HEA, he traveled extensively throughout the US on environmental and forensic engineering assignments and made major contributions to the firm's quality-control programs as well as its national growth.

He loved boating, fishing and spending summers in Block Island. Most of all he loved his family and constantly showed that love in his unselfish and caring ways. He made a difference in all of the lives that he touched, and will be truly missed by family, friends and his co-workers at HEA.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Halliwell, his mother, Lillian Lillibridge, his father Cliff Halliwell, his sister Sarah Robinson and his brother, Jack Halliwell, as well as their spouses and children and grandchildren. Visiting hours will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich.

His funeral and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Block Island Fire and Rescue Fund, P.O. Box 220, Block Island, R.I. 02807.
