Obituary: Robert D.L. Crandall, 89

A member of the "Greatest Generation," Crandall served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.


Robert D.L. Crandall, 89, died on Tuesday, July 24. He was born and raised in West Haven, Conn., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He volunteered for the submarine service and was trained at the seabase in Groton. After the war, he spent his career in insurance, retiring from Aetna in 1986.

He was married to the late Jeanne Whitaker for 44 years. He is survived by four children and longtime companion Joyce Sangster, of East Greenwich.

Crandall lived in East Greenwich in his final years. Calling hours at Hill Funeral Home are Saturday, July 28, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon funeral service at Christ Church on Post Road.
