Obituary: Walter J. Schubert, Ph.D., 88

Walter J. Schubert, Ph.D., 88, of East Greenwich, died peacefully July 21, at Brentwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Duffy Schubert for 32 years. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late William H. and Helen Byzinski Schubert.

Dr. Schubert received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D., from Fordham University with his Ph.D. conferred in 1950. He taught organic chemistry at Fordham's College of Pharmacy for 19 years and served as the department head. He authored Lignin Biochemistry (Academic Press, 1965), a seminal work in lignin studies. He also authored and co-authored in excess of 50 scientific publications presenting more than a dozen at worldwide conferences.

He concluded his career teaching chemistry at Christ the King High School, Middle Village, N.Y., where he met his beloved wife. He retired in 1985 as chairman of the school's science department.

In his spare time, Dr. Schubert enjoyed traveling, listening to his vast jazz record collection, reading, gardening, following baseball and attending the theater.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Adelaine Parks of Floral Park, N.Y. He leaves also four nephews, Anthony J. Parks (Alison) of Garden City, N.Y., William F. Parks (Diana) of Cranston, Christopher J. Parks, Ph.D., (Catherine) of Ellicott City, Md., and John J. Parks (Margaret) of Garden City, N.Y. Additionally, he leaves a niece, Jeanne Marie Parks of Commack, N.Y. He also leaves numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral Thursday, July 25th at 10 a.m. from the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial will be private. Calling hours are Wednesday, July 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
