EG Junction? And A Robin Kall Groupie

What to love and loathe about East Greenwich this week.

RANT: Wickford Junction Train Station is days from opening.

Don’t get me wrong. I am thrilled for them. It sounds like the project is a long-time dream come true for the developers and that they have done a very nice overall job with the actual construction.

So why am I stamping my foot?

I WANNA TRAIN STATION HERE!

The way I see it, we already have rails bifurcating our town, creating a wrong side of the tracks mentality. There are few places more idyllic in East Greenwich than the waterfront area - except when a building-shaking freight or Amtrak screeches through. Which seems to happen almost every hour.

So why not make lemonade and have a commuter rail stop in town?

And while we’re at it, how about a ferry from the waterfront to Warwick, Bristol and Riverside.

It seems with gas prices already tipping into $4 territory, it is time to revisit these ideas - soon!

RAVE: I have to give a quick self-interested hurrah for . Self-interested because the Friends of East Greenwich Free Library — of which I am a member — invited her to speak at our business planning meeting last week. But so what? My finger in the pie does not delineate from her status as a local literary treasure.

Anyone who can take a love of reading and turn it into a career that spreads the joy to all wages is an instant heroine in my book. So thank you, Robin! You are our own local Oprah, NYT Book Review and Kirkus all rolled into one (except you’re funnier)!
