Broken Tail Light Leads Police to Shrooms, Pot, Pills

East Greenwich Police charged a 24-year-old Warwick man with two felony drug charges after officers found Adderall pills a bag of psilocybin mushrooms, an illegal hallucinogenic, in his car during a traffic stop on July 10.

Police said Juan A. Gonzalez, 24, of 114 Peabody Drive, Warwick, was stopped on Post Road at around 6:30 p.m. after an officer on patrol saw his middle brake light wasn’t working.

Once stopped, the officer detected an “overwhelming” odor of burnt marijuana, according to a police report, and Gonzalez said he knew his third brake light wasn’t working because he just rewired his speakers.

While talking to Gonzalez, police noticed several lighters and small green leaves on the seats of the car that looked like bits of marijuana.

In the trunk, officers found a backpack containing four bags of marijuana, a small plastic bag containing three pills that were later identified as Adderall, and some mushrooms wrapped in tin foil.

Gonzalez reportedly told officers the mushrooms weren't his and the pills were for his “baby momma.”

Police said the marijuana totaled 12 grams.

Gonzalez is facing 2 felony counts of possession of a schedule IV controlled substance and a traffic tribunal summons for marijuana possession under an ounce.

He was released on personal recognizance and is due to appear in court for an Aug. 25 attorney general screening conference.
