Cop Watches DUI Driver Crash, Spin Out

22-year-old promised to never drink and drive again.

An East Greenwich Police officer sitting in his cruiser at a stop sign April 7 didn't have to travel far to make his most recent driving under the influence arrest.

Shortly after midnight, the officer was stopped at the stop sign at Rector and Spring Streets when he heard an engine revving.

A moment later, he saw a black Nissan Altima traveling west on Spring Street at a high rate of speed that drove by, crashed into a tree on the right half of the roadway, spin 180 degrees and come to a stop on the sidewalk at Spring and Mawney Streets.

The driver, identified as Joseph A. Ciarmello, 22, of 55 Country Lane, Warwick, reportedly was drunk and suffered minor injuries from the accident. He was taken to Kent Hospital where he was later cited for driving under the influence.

Ciarmello reportedly told police that he was sorry for drinking and driving and promised to never do it again.

Along with the DUI charge, Ciarmello was cited for a lane roadway violation, speeding and refusing a chemical test.
