Driver in Serious Condition Following Deadly Crash

Nicholas Whiteley is still listed in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital following a deadly crash in East Greenwich Sunday.

The driver in Sunday's deadly crash is still in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital while another passenger was treated and released the same day.

Nicholas Whiteley, 21, of North Kingstown was driving the pickup truck on Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich when it struck two boulders and went airborne, hitting a telephone pole before overturning. According to reports, Whiteley was ejected from the vehicle along with another passenger.

Christopher Mortin, 19, was trapped inside the vehicle along with another passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a resident who lives nearby and was the first to respond to the scene, he could hear Mortin calling out for help from within the car.

It took more than an hour for rescue crews to get Mortin and the other passenger out of the truck in what East Greenwich Fire Chief Peter Henrikson called "the most difficult extrication" he's ever seen. Mortin was then airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital. Hospital representatives say that Mortin was treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital on Sunday.

Madeline "Maddie" Healey, 18, and Michael Ruggieri, 19, were both pronounced death at the scene. Funeral services for Healey have been scheduled for Saturday.
