EG Hit-and-Run Suspect Awaits Next Hearing

Amanda Ashman, 23, is accused of driving away from the scene in East Greenwich where her car hit two pedestrians.

The suspect in an East Greenwich hit-and-run remains free on personal recognizance until her next court appearance.

Amanda Ashman, 23, of Glocester, faces two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, injury resulting; DUI, first offense; DUI resulting in serious injury; marijuana possession; and driving in possession of drugs following the Feb. 20 incident in East Greenwich.

Police also cited Ashman for speeding, leaving the roadway, and driving without a seat belt.

According to police, Ashman's car hit two pedestrians in front of the Greenwich Hotel just before midnight, then left the scene. Rescue crews transported one of the victims, a 49-year-old man who was found unconscious at the site of the incident, to Kent County Hospital for treatment. The other victim, a 40-year-old woman, suffered injuries to her leg.

State Police officers later stopped Ashman's car on Rte. 44 in Smithfield after another driver called police and reported seeing her car speeding and moving erratically on the road.

Officers reported finding damage to Ashman's vehicle possibly caused by hitting the pedestrians, and determined that Ashman was intoxicated at the time of her arrest.

Later tests showed her blood-alcohol level to be .265, according to State Police.

Judge William C. Clifton released Ashman on personal recognizance at her Feb. 20 arraignment in Third District Court.

Her case has been referred to Superior Court for a felony hearing to be scheduled.
