EG Police Lieutenant Arrested For Assault, Disorderly Conduct

Paul Nahrgang is accused of using excessive force while on duty May 22.

State Police arrested EG Police Lt. Paul Nahrgang, 44, of Landis Drive in Warwick Tuesday on charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault, following an incident while on duty May 22.

The arrest was the result of an investigation by members of the Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit of an incident that occurred at the East Greenwich Police Station in the early evening hours on May 22.  EG Police Chief Tom Coyle contacted the State Police and requested assistance after observing a video tape of the incident the following day.

The State Police allege that on May 22, Nahrgang used excessive force in assaulting the 44-year-old victim while he was in police custody. The victim had been arrested earlier in the evening for malicious mischief.
