EG Police's Nahrgang Pleads Not Guilty To Assault

Nahrgang is accused of using excessive force while on duty.

East Greenwich Police Lieutenant Paul Nahrgang pleaded not guilty at Kent County Courthouse Tuesday morning on charges he used excessive force on a prisoner May 22.

State Police arrested Nahrgang, 44, on July 16 on charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault, both misdemeanors.

The arrest was the result of an investigation by members of the Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit of an incident that occurred at the East Greenwich Police Station in the early evening hours on May 22.  EG Police Chief Tom Coyle contacted the State Police and requested assistance after observing a video tape of the incident the following day.

Nahrgang was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and is next due back in court Tuesday, Aug. 6. He has been suspended with pay.
