Man Swallows Heroin During Police Pursuit

East Greenwich Police arrested Steven Lenis, 20, of Mount Pleasant Avenue, Providence, for possessing heroin with intent to deliver and eluding police.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, police detectives observed what appeared to be drug transaction taking place in a parking lot on Post Road, according to Detective Sgt. Jon Chirnside.

When detectives stopped Lenis’s vehicle and approached him, he drove off. After a short pursuit, Lenis was stopped and arrested. Police learned Lenis had ingested 14 bags of heroin during the pursuit. He was treated at Kent Hospital and arraigned Friday, Jan. 3. He was ordered held without bail.

In addition to the heroin, police seized $1,400 in cash.

Lenis will appear in Third District Court on Monday, Jan. 6.
