Officer Puts Down Suffering Deer

The deer was suffering after being struck by a car.

An East Greenwich Police officer had to take the life of a a deer that was struck by a car on Frenchtown Road recently.

According to a police report, an officer was dispatched to Frenchtown Road at Juniper Drive at around 9:30 p.m. on March 1 for a report of an accident between a car and a deer.

Upon arrival, the officer found the deer lying in the roadway and a man standing nearby to keep cars from hitting it as they drove by.

The deer was struggling to stand up but couldn't, so the officer reported that he told the man to go back to his family along with two other people who had stopped to watch.

The officer then got his shotgun and discharged one 12-gauge shot, killing the deer.

The state Department of Environmental Management was contacted to pick up the deer.
