Police Log: After Handgun Doesn't Work, Officer Uses Shotgun to Euthanize Raccoon

The following arrest and incident reports were provided by East Greenwich police. They do not indicate a conviction.

HARASSING PHONE CALLS
East Greenwich Police took a report on May 5 from a West Warwick Woman and employee of the McDonalds in East Greewich who said she has been getting harassing phone calls at work.

Police said the woman told them that the caller has been trying to get her schduled.

Police are investigating.

FOUND DOG
Police helped reunite a lost dog with its owner on May 5 after an East Greenwich woman picked the dog up at the corner of Division and Shippeetown Roads on May 5.

The dog, described as a female fox hound, was brought to North Kingstown Animal Hospital. The dog’s owner, a Barboursville, Va., resident, claimed the dog a couple of hours later.

ANIMAL COMPLAINT
On May 5, police were contacted by a Pequot Trail resident who told police that there was an aggressive dog in the neighborhood.

Police said the complainant said there was a large, unrestrained brown dog in the area and she was concerned for her safety because of the dog’s size and her feeling that it seemed aggressive.

Police spoke with the dog’s owner and reminded her of the town’s requirement to have the dog restrained and that it had been intimidating neighborhood school children.

BRUSH FIRE
East Greenwich firefighters extinguished a dumpster fire on Carrs Pond Road on May 7.

According to a police report, crews from the East Greenwich Fire Department, along with mutual aid from nearby fire departments, put out the fire which was located in a Dumpster a few hundred yards from the junk yard.

The fire marshal and the state Department of Environmental Management were called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

SICK RACCOON
An East Greenwich police officer euthanized a sickly racoon near Rector Street on May 8.

Police said they responded to a report of a sickly racoon on May 8 at around 8 a.m. The racoon had visible hip problems and didn’t run away when approached.

The officer tried to euthanize the animal with his handgun two times, but both attempts failed. The officer then used his shotgun and finally was able to put the animal down.

CAR DAMAGED
A 54-year-old Hope Valley woman told police on May 8 that she hit a manhole cover on Water Street, causing damage to her tire.

Police said the manholes had been raised as the street was in the process of being repaved and the accident occurred on May 1.

The woman produced a repair bill for $144.64.

Police documented the incident.

SMASHED WINDOW
A 27-year-old Providence woman told police on May 8 that her driver’s side window shattered while she was driving on Division Road at around 4 p.m.

Police responded to area on Division Road near the Interstate 95 onramps for a report of a disabled motor vehicle where they met with the woman who said she believed the damage was caused by a rock propelled from another car.

The woman reportedly said she didn’t see anyone throw anyhting at her car and police observed no indication the damage was self inflicted.

FRAUD
A 51-year-old Cindy Ann Drive resident told police on May 9 that he got a letter in the mail from a company named Speedy Cash with a past due bill of $188.56.

The only problem is that the man said he never had any contact with the company yet they had his Social Security number and date of birth.

Police said the man spoke with their customer service department who advised him to file a police report to let their fraud department start an investigation.

Police documented the incident.

WARRANTS
Police charged Stephen Charles Brockman, 52, of 45 East St., West Warwick, with a warrant May 9 at 6:10 p.m.

Police said Brockman was a passenger in a car pulled over for tail lamps that weren’t working. A check of his ID showed he had an active warrant out of Portsmouth and was taken into custody without incident.

On May 10, police charged Charles Andrew Smith, 30, of 293 Grove Ave., Warwick, with a warrant May 10 at 6:10 p.m.

Police said Smith was stopped after an officer could hear music blasting from the car he was driving even though the police cruiser’s windows were up.

Once stopped, a check of Smith’s ID showed he was wanted for an active bench warrant.

He was taken into custody without incident.

LICENSE PLATE STOLEN
A bus driver for the town reported that someone stole the front license plate to his car while it was parked in the municipal lot near Swift Gym on May 9 during his shift.

Police said the license plate bracket for the plate was left on the car and not damaged.
