Police Log: Bomb Bust & Too-Drunk Patrons

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the East Greenwich Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Friday, Nov. 15

11:30 a.m. – The manager of Cumberland Farms on Post Road told police she was being harrassed by a customer who was angry about an injury he suffered at the store two weeks earlier. The manager said the man came in today, demanding to know why the manager had been unsympathetic. The manager told police she didn’t want to have them issue a no-trespass order on the man, but she would ask them to if the man, a regular customer, continued to bother her about the incident. The man told police he understood.

6:40 p.m. – Police were called to New England Tech after security there found a suspicious-looking mason jar with a nail through the lid filled with a clear liquid. It was found in an open area near the balcony overlooking the entrance. After some investigating, police learned the Rhode Island Building Officials had held a meeting there earlier and that one of the attendees was showing the officials a new material that could prevent leaks even after a nail went through it.

8:49 p.m. – A South Road resident complained about a neighbor she said had been setting of loud fireworks earlier in the evening. She had shot some video of the fireworks; the video was dark but fireworks were visible over what appeared to be her neighbor’s property. Police followed up with the neighbor, who said he understood.

Sunday, Nov. 17

8:52 p.m. – The manager of Outback Steakhouse notified police after a drunk patron left the restaurant, got in his car and drove away. He and a woman had come into the Division Street restaurant and ordered drinks at the bar. Only after the bartender had served the pair did she realize they were both already very drunk, so she took the drinks away. The manager offered to call a cab for the couple, but the man refused and left to smoke a cigarette. Instead, however, he drove away, leaving the woman. She refused to identify herself, but police eventually discovered the couple lived in Coventry. Outback agreed to pay the $40 taxi fare to take her home since the restaurant had unwittingly served them.
