Police Log: Food Fight Spills onto Main St., Phone Scammer Threatens to Slash Throats

The following arrest and incident reports were provided by East Greenwich police. They do not indicate a conviction.

DOMESTIC
Police charged Harris K. Moid, 19, of 95 River Farm Drive, East Greenwich, with domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct May 19 at 11:15 a.m.

Police said Moid turned himself into police for an incident that occurred on May 11.

AMMO TURNED IN
A 71-year-old East Greenwich man turned in ammunition on May 19 for a few firearms he no longer owns, police said.

The man turned in a box containing 23 shotgun shells, one .45 caliber round and 16 .38 caliber rounds.

The ammunition was logged and put in the armory for destruction at a later date.

SIGN DAMAGED
The owner of Drizzle Pizza on South County Trail told police on May 19 that the flower boxes and business sign on the curb area at the intersection of South County Trail and Middle Road was damaged by a tractor trailer.

Police said the damage was minor and the incident was documented.

DOG BITE
A Terminix employee was bitten by a dog while working at a house on Middle Road on May 15, police said, and the dog was quarantined briefly.

Police said the dog was up to date on its rabies shots but was not licensed. The owner was told to get the dog licensed.

CAR FIRE
East Greenwich Firefighters extinguished a car on fire at East Greenwich Square on May 20.

Police said a 2003 Dodge Stratus caught fire and a patrolman attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher from his police vehicle, but the fire was ultimately put out by East Greenwich firefighters.

A car parked next to the Dodge suffered minor paint damage from the heat and flames, police said, but nobody was hurt in the incident.

The fire broke out at around 1:20 p.m.

SCAMMER THREATS
A telephone scammer who called Karma Couture on May 21 threatened to slit employees' throats after they caught on to the scam, police said.

Police said a man with a foreign voice called and said they had an outstanding loan, instructing them to go to CVS to get a prepaid credit card. He was promptly told they knew he was a scammer and hung up.

A few minutes later, a woman with an accent called, asking for someone who works at the store by name. She was hung up on before a third call from the man again who reportedly got upset and threatened to slit their throats, saying he knew where she lived.

Police said the number reported by caller ID is cited as a scam number after a Google search and only returns a busy signal when called.

DAMAGE AT CHINA BUFFET
The owner of China Buffet at 1000 Division Road reported damage to a window on May 21, police said.

Police said the owner told them the business is in the process of being renovated and the damage occurred sometime between 3 and 4 p.m. when he went away for a lunch break.

It appeared the damage might have been caused by a nearby work machine used by a construction company and after a few phone calls, police said the owner of the company promised to make amends if one of his employees accidentally broke the window.

Police said the owner saw workers using the machine when he left for lunch and they were gone when he came back.

MONEY STOLEN
A Post Road in East Greenwich resident told police on May 22 that someone withdrew $195 from her savings account.

The woman noticed the theft while transferring money using her laptop computer and when she contacted the bank, they said the withdrawal was made in person at the East Greenwich Pawtucket Credit Union branch.

The investigation is ongoing.

THREATENED ON THE ROAD
A Warwick man reported a harrowing tale of being physically assaulted after a road rage incident on Post Road May 23.

Police said they met the victim in the American Legion parking lot on Post Road at 3:30 p.m. and he told them he was driving on Post Road when another motorist driving a small black Hyundai pulled in front of him at high speed and then slammed on his brakes.

The victim said he thought the Hyundai driver, described as a white unshaven man weighing between 190 and 200 pounds, was trying to get him to rear-end him and drove erratically, shifting between lanes for a distance along Post Road before they came to a stop at the intersection at Cedar Avenue.

While the light was red, the Hyundai driver got out of his car and said "do you have a problem? Let's go right now!"

He then spit at the victim and threw an empty bottle of water, striking him in the face.

The victim then called police, prompting the suspect to get back in his car, pull a U-turn and drive off heading south on Post Road.

The suspect's car had a Massachusetts license plate, police said, but the number did not match the description of a dark Hyundai.

Police are investigating.

SINK HOLE
Police responded to a report of a sink hole on Miss Fry Drive on May 24, prompting a response from the East Greenwich Department of Public Works.

Police said the hole was in front of the house at 37 Miss Fry Drive and was about three feet across and two feet deep.

DPW crews responded to the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m. and put cones up as a temporary measure before repairs could be made later.

FOOD FIGHT
East Greenwich Police settled a dispute between two groups of friends after an argument in an apartment above Fat Belly's on Main Street spilled out onto the street — literally.

Police said they responded to the scene at around 12:30 p.m. on May 25 and found eggs smashed on the sidewalk along with several small cups of salsa.

Police responded after two men called police to say food was being thrown at them from the apartment.

In the apartment, police encountered a man who said there was an argument between friends and it escalated into a food fight between the two groups. In all, the dispute involved four men aged between 22 and 24.

Nobody wished to press charges, police said, but police did instruct the men to clean up all the food debris on the sidewalk.

Some eggs struck a vehicle parked on the street in front of the restaurant. Police contacted the owner of the vehicle, identified as a 30-year-old North Kingstown man, who said he didn't wish to press charges after he arrived at the scene and took a look the egging.

Everyone was cleared from the scene without further incident.
