Police Log: Missing Hockey Gear, Sinking Dinghy, Mattress On Fire

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the East Greenwich Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Monday, Nov.18

5:40 p.m. – A South Road resident told police her neighbor’s dog was constantly in her yard and had chased her son into their house an hour ago, and jumped on the hood of his car when he arrived home Sunday. The owner of the dog, who lives across the street, acknowledged the dog gets out from time to time. Police forwarded the report to the animal control officer, who sent the owner a ticket.

9:45 a.m. – An employee of ON Semiconductor on South County Trail spread all his hockey gear out on the lawn to dry it out at about 8:45 a.m., as he said he’d done many times before. When he returned at around 3 p.m. to collect his gear, all 12 items were gone. He said he would check to see if ON has any outdoor surveillance videos.

8:06 p.m. – Police found a 14-year-old boy passed out on Bunker Hill Lane from what appeared to be alcohol intoxication. EGFD rescue took the boy to Kent Hospital for detox. The boy’s parents were notified.

Saturday, Nov. 23

2:45 p.m. – Police were called to the town boat launch off Crompton Avenue after a report someone in the water in a sinking boat. Police found a man swimming toward shore, towing a semi-submerged dinghy. Police helped the man, an East Greenwich resident, from the water and recovered the dinghy. He explained he had been trying to switch a summer mooring to a winter mooring but his boat began to take on water and then he fell in. He was treated by EGFD rescue.

5:58 p.m. – While on routine patrol, police noticed a large fire in the woods behind 3400 South County Trail. The fire turned out to be on property on South Road. A neighbor said the property owner at 310 South Road had had fires there in the past. By the time EGFD and police got to the fire, it had died down a bit. They found two mattresses and PVC piping in a 20x20 fire pit. They used fire extinguishers to put out the fire. The property owner was not there. Police planned to contact him.
