Police Log: Missing Steam Engine & Scrap Metal Thievery

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the East Greenwich Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Friday, Nov. 8

8:51 a.m. – A New England Wireless & Steam Museum board member told police a “Burrell” Showman Model Steam Engine was missing. He said the engine was about 2 feet long, 1 foot high and very heavy, possibly needing two people to move it. It was last seen on Sept. 21, the date of the museum’s annual Steam Up.

10:45 a.m. – A manager at Dave’s told police about a shoplifting after the fact. He said he watched on video as a woman with a cane in her shopping cart ordered four containers of prepared foods worth about $20, then left without paying. The manager gave police the license number of the car she was driving and it came back to a woman in Warwick. The photo on the license appeared to match the video. The manager said the store did not want to press charges but asked that a no-trespass order be issued.

Sunday, Nov. 10

12:13 p.m. – Police arrested three Warwick men, ages 43, 47, and 22, for larceny under $1,500 and obstructing police, after allegedly attempting to steal scrap metal from behind the Grange on South County Trail. The manager of the Grange told police he saw several men in the woods and they were dragging something. When police confronted the men, all three dropped the metal rods they were dragging and ran. Police intercepted them nearby Dave’s and they were taken into custody. A pair of tree lopers were seized that the men were using to cut a path through the woods. At the station, it was discovered the 22-year-old had a bench warrant too.
