Police Log: Scams, Fleas & A Warrant

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the East Greenwich Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Monday, Dec. 9

3:51 p.m. – An East Greenwich woman told police she’d been the victim of fraud after learning someone had opened an account at a Nordstrom in California using her driver’s license and Social Security numbers. Through a credit rating agency, she learned attempts to gain credit cards through other California department stores had been made.

3:27 p.m. – An East Greenwich man told police someone charged $112 for a scale at Office Depot on his Visa card on Dec. 5. The scale was sent to an address in Pawtucket. The person in Pawtucket, who was Ukrainian, appeared to be unwittingly reshipping packages to a contact named “Eugene,” according to the report. The type of scam was known to the postal inspector.

8:03 p.m. – Police arrested Frank Thomas Smith III, 36, of Pettaquamscutt Lake Road, Saunderstown, on a District Court bench warrant after he was stopped because of a faulty car tail light. Routine checks of the driver and his passenger turned up a warrant on Smith, the passenger. He was processed at the station and taken to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

Thursday, Dec. 12

5:45 p.m. – An Ocean State bus driver told police that during an inspection of his bus, he’d found a small pile of straw-colored grass under his seat and what appeared to be a large number of bugs, possibly fleas, on the floor area. He thought perhaps someone had placed the grass and bugs in his bus. Police noted that small animals often look for shelter when the weather turns cold and they could carry bugs on them.

Friday, Dec. 13

5:19 p.m. – The owner of Manic Training on South County Trail told police one of her business signs was taken overnight. The sign, 4 feet by 2 feet, was black with orange and white lettering.
