Council President Responds To EG Officer's Arrest

East Greenwich Town Council President Michael Isaacs released this statement following the arrest Tuesday of EG Police Lieutenant Paul Nahrgang for using excessive force:

Lieutenant Paul Nahrgang of the East Greenwich Police Department has been charged by the State Police with misdemeanor simple assault and disorderly conduct for acts that occurred at the East Greenwich Police Station on May 22, 2013. The alleged assault involved an individual who had been arrested for disorderly conduct and vandalism. Police Chief Thomas E. Coyle, III, was immediately notified after the incident occurred. Chief Coyle and Deputy Chief Stephen Brown conducted an investigation. As a result, Chief Coyle suspended Lieutenant Nahrgang and turned the matter over to the State Police for further investigation. At the present time, the Attorney General’s office is proceeding with the criminal prosecution of Lieutenant Nahrgang.

Lieutenant Nahrgang’s conduct as alleged in the criminal complaint is contrary to the high standards of the East Greenwich Police Department and will not be tolerated. Lieutenant Nahrgang will remain suspended until further action can be taken against him as permitted by the Rhode Island Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights.
