In EG, No Takers For Same Sex Marriage License On First Day

Same-sex marriage became legal Thursday, Aug. 1.

No one showed up at East Greenwich Town Hall Thursday, Aug. 1, to take advantage of the new law in Rhode Island allowing same sex couples to marry.

Same sex marriage became legal Aug. 1. Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed it into law in May. Same-sex civil union was legalized in 2011, but there had been no takers for civil union in East Greenwich, according to the Town Clerk’s office.

Before Aug. 1, couples who lived in Rhode Island had to get a marriage license in the city or town where the bride lived. Now, for all couples, a license can be obtained from the city or town where either member of the couple lives.
