Middle Road Bridge Work is On Time, Will Open at End of August

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation said crews are finishing up concrete work on the west side of the bridge and will soon shift to the east side of the bridge.

Work is progressing on the Middle Road Bridge in East Greenwich and the project is on time and traffic should soon start flowing once again by the end of August.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation said crews are finishing up concrete work on the west side of the bridge and will soon shift to the east side of the bridge.

"There will be some work continuing this fall, as we paint the steel below the structure. The process will take about two weeks and may require some nighttime lane closures on Route 4," said Rose Amoros, chief public affairs officer.

The closure of the bridge has been a significant inconvenience for residents who drove over it every day up until the beginning of the project in June.

The bridge work is part of a $2.9 million contract with Cardi Corporation to fix key structures in nine Rhode Island cities and towns.

The bridge, originally built in 1969, is undergoing deck, joint and sidewalk repairs.

During its closure, traffic that normally would cross the bridge is being detoured along South County Trail, Division Street and Howland Road.
