Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, August 17.

Planning, Historic District meet: The Planning Board will meet in Council Chambers at Town Hall, while the Historic District Commission will meet across the hall in the conference room tonight, both at 7 p.m. Agendas for both are attached.

AARP safe driving course: Adults 55 and over are invited to take this refresher course in defensive driving, sponsored by the AARP. Successful completion of the course qualifies those over 55 for a discount on auto insurance. The class will be held at Swift Community Center from 1 to 5:30 p.m. The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. NRTA (National Retirement Teachers Association) members are eligible to take this class for free! For more information, call 886-8669, ext 1.

Shady Lea Mill Open Studios Day: The mill, down the road a bit in North Kingstown, is home to several local artists. It’s open every Wednesday during the summer from noon to 5 p.m. A visit combines some history and a lot of art. 215 Shady Lea Road, N.K.

Summer Reading Program Awards Night: The East Greenwich Free Library will be celebrating those who have participated in the summer reading program. At the library at 7 p.m.

Weather & tides: The sun is back! High tide will be at 10:50 a.m. and 11:10 p.m.; low tide will be at 3:44 a.m. and 4:11 p.m. Sunrise is at 5:55 a.m.; sunset is at 7:43 p.m.
