Rep. Bob Watson Tests Positive For Cocaine, Marijuana

The results are from a urine sample taken the night of his arrest in East Haven, Connecticut.

State Rep. Bob Watson of East Greenwich, tested positive for cocaine and marijuana after being pulled over on April 22, according to Deputy Chief John Mannion, of the East Haven Police Department, Friday afternoon.

Watson was pulled over during a routine sobriety check point set up on Friday evening, April 22, in East Haven. According to the police report, Watson had slurred speech and appeared to be intoxicated. He failed a field sobriety test and police found a small bag of marijuana and a pipe in his pocket when they were arresting him. He was charged with DUI and possession of marijuana.

Watson has acknowledged having the marijuana but said he had not smoked any that night. He said he had it because of the pancreatitis that sent him to the hospital in November. He said that he had had “a few drinks” with a friend earlier and that he was returning to Rhode Island.

Watson, a Republican — who was house minority leader until a month ago, when his caucus voted him out following the arrest — said the charges are wrong.

"I absolutely deny the most recent allegation against me. I deny ever doing cocaine," Watson told Bob Plain of WPRO's Plain Speak blog on Friday.

The toxicology lab did not release data on the amount of drug found because to have any amount is illegal in the state of Connecticut, Mannion said.

“It doesn’t make any difference if you inhale two lines of cocaine, one line of cocaine or two pounds,” he said. The charge, Mannion said, is the same: Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Watson is due back in court in Connecticut on Tuesday, June 7.
