The Avengers held on to their undefeated record last Saturday with a 15-13 win over Classical, setting up a battle royale against Middletown, which is also unbeaten so far this season.
The Classical Purples quickly set the Avengers back on their heels last Saturday with a touchdown by Derek Jackson just minutes into the first quarter, although they missed the conversion kick. The Avenger’s defense came back, with EG’s Eric Lauro forcing a safety closing the gap to 2-6 for first quarter. EG scored on a touchdown pass by quarterback Andrew Miner to Pete Hunzicker in the second quarter, but also missed the conversion kick leaving the Avengers ahead 8-6 at the half.
The Avengers scored on another touchdown pass to Cam Rocke in the third quarter, followed by a successful extra point kick by Alex Cleary bringing the score to 15-6. Classical came back with a long pass to Tat Allen for a touchdown, followed by a successful conversion kick. EG’s defense was able to hold back the Purples from retaking the lead, resulting in an Avenger 15-13 win.
Saturday’s win advanced the Avenger’s winning record to 5-0 within the division and 7-0 overall. Looking ahead, EG next faces the Middletown Islanders, who are undefeated and lead the division in wins as well as points scored. EG's Miner said, “Middletown will be the biggest challenge we face this year.”
The Islander’s offense has been highly productive this season, averaging 45 points per game as compared to the Avenger’s 32 points per game. The teams are fairly well matched defensively, with the Islanders allowing an average of 12 points per game compared to the Avenger’s defensive record of 11 points allowed per game.
The Avengers host the Middletown Islanders Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Carcieri Field. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team.
