EG Girls Ready to Put the Hammer Down at Nationals

Two East Greenwich High School girls are ready to represent at the New Balance High School Track and Field Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., on Friday the 13th.

Summer Murray, a senior, qualified for the Emerging Elite category in both hammer and discus, throwing 124'5 in hammer, "just missing the Championship mark," she said. The qualifying mark for Emerging Elite is 100 feet.

In discus, she threw 124 feet.

Meanwhile Lauren Swanson, a junior, will be going to Championship nationals for the hammer throw after she threw 145'3 — far beyond the 125' mark.

At states at Brown University this year, she scored 9th with a throw of 140'7 and is throwing again at the Hammer New Englands at Mt. Pleasant.

For Murray, getting to nationals is a big opportunity and something she knew she couldn't miss. It also serves as a salve of sorts after being injured.

"Despite not being able to go to States due to a mild concussion, I would not miss Nationals for the world," she said.
