EGHS's Mrs. Page Named R.I. Teacher Of The Year

In a surprise assembly, Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced Patricia Page, a business teacher at the high school, had earned the singular distinction.

It's hard to keep a secret as big as this, but when Gov. Lincoln Chafee got up to speak during an assembly at East Greenwich High School allegedly in honor of the school's "You Matter" social media campaign, Patricia Page said she still did not realize the real reason behind the assembly was because she had been named the Rhode Island Teacher of the Year.

But Chafee's remarks quickly shifted.

"We're not here for You Matter," he said. "We're here for the Teacher of the Year."

As his description of that teacher narrowed and it became clear it was Page, a business and computer technology teacher, a murmur began to grow in the crowd. When her name was called, the assembly burst into applause and a standing ovation.

We will be posting more about the event later today.
