Exploring Nature On The Potowomut

Fourth and fifth graders at Rocky Hill School get to spend two days exploring the nature of the Potowomut River.

Each spring, Rocky Hill School’s fourth and fifth grade students take part in a two-day outdoor educational program that includes a canoe trip on the Potowomut River, science-based learning activities, small-group dynamic challenges and personal reflections. Fifth graders even get to campout on school grounds.

“It’s sort of their big right of passage, it’s the thing they look forward too,” said chaperone Beth DeGerlia.

The group of fourth and fifth grade students, teachers and parents began the trip by canoeing up the Potowomut River to a spot where teachers offer a variety of workshops related to the theme of science.

After the workshops, the students continued canoeing up the river to another spot where they had lunch and conducted some experiments.

“I think its really fun to get out and enjoy not just our beautiful campus, but our waterfront and great community," said Jason DeGerlia, a fifth grader. "It's a great experience to get out of our classroom."
