The EG Avengers faced their toughest opponent of the season this past Friday and came up short, losing to the Middletown Islanders 20-7.
The Avengers were able to hold back the Islanders – who came into the game undefeated with an impressive offensive record and strong defense – until the second quarter, when Connor Russ ran the ball in for a touchdown, followed by a successful extra point kick by Preston Ferreira. The teams left the field at the half with the Islanders ahead 7-0.
The Avengers came back well into the third quarter with a short running touchdown by Carney Crawford, followed by an extra point kick by Alex Cleary, tying the game. EG’s offense was unable to penetrate the Islander defense in the last quarter despite an Islander fumble recovered by Cam Rocke.
Middletown’s Connor Russ scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with one successful conversion kick by Preston Ferreira. Middletown left the field with a 20-7 win over EG, leaving the Islanders with an impressive record of 8-0 within the division and an 9-0 overall.
Despite the Avs limited practices last week due to Hurricane Sandy, Coach John George was happy with the way that the team played.
“We were prepared and I thought it was a good game that was well played on both sides of the ball.”
Quarterback Andrew Miner said, “We played them tough all game long.”
Looking forward, Coach George is looking to “clean things up a bit and be at our peak going into the playoffs.”
With only two games left in the regular season, the Avengers next face the Burrillville Broncos, who are 1-5 in the division and 2-6 overall. East Greenwich will play their final regular season game on Thanksgiving at Narragansett High School at 10 a.m. Narragansett is currently 3-3 in the division and 4-4 overall.
Cheer on the Avengers Friday, Nov. 8, at Carcieri Field when they host Burrillville at 7 p.m.
