Strategic Planning Panel To Set Course For Schools

The School Committee is forming an ad hoc committee to "think strategically about the future of the East Greenwich School District."

What is the primary purpose of the East Greenwich School District and where does the EGSD want to be in 10 years are the two questions School Committee members wrestled with at their meeting last week on strategic planning. It was the first step in a process that could shape the future of EG public schools.

The second step is formation of an ad hoc strategic planning committee. The School Committee approved a "charge" for that committee at its Sept. 17 meeting.

The ad hoc committee is to be comprised of at least each of the following, for a total of no more than 20 members: three interested community members, three EGSD faculty or staff members, one EGSD student, two EG town councilors, one EG school committee member, and Supt. Victor Mercurio (or his designee).

The panel will exist only until the School Committee adopts a strategic plan.

According to the charge, the committee will participate in forums to discuss the direction of the school system; help review and analysis the district's strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats; help develop objectives and goals; and make recommendations.

This is not an open-ended process. Mercurio said at the meeting Sept. 10 that he hoped to have something in place by December.

"It's a fairly aggressive timeline," he said.

Interested candidates should send a letter to Supt. Victor Mercurio, 111 Peirce St., or vmercurio@egsd.net.
