Summer Reading List? Go Local and Buy the Books in EG

Symposium Books in East Greenwich is carrying local schools' summer reading lists.

If your child has a summer reading list and you haven't gotten the books yet, stop for a minute before you sit down at the computer.

You can buy those books locally.

Symposium Books owner Anne Marie said the store, located in East Greenwich Square at 1000 Division Road, is carrying the reading lists for Cole Middle School as well as East Greenwich High School.

"They're in stock and ready to go!" she said.

That means the store has copies of The Crucible, which every high school student must read (and rightly so!).

Also at the high school level: To Kill a Mockingbird, Siddhartha, A Tale of Two Cities, Caleb's Crossing, Infidel, Grendel, Autobiography of Malcolm X, Making Movies, On Writing by Stephen King, great Expectations, Pride and Predjudice, A Streetcar Names Desire and Go Tell it on the Mountain.

At the Middle School level, you'll find Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen — a gripping tale of a boy who fends for himself on a deserted island after a private plane he's a passenger in crashes. (Editor's note: this book stuck with me for years. I've never looked at a $20 bill the same.)

There's also Harry Potter by JK Rowling and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.

The other smart thing about buying books locally, aside from supporting a local business and keeping your money here in East Greenwich, is that it gives you a chance to pick a book or two for your own summer reading list. Because children aren't the only ones that need to read during the summer.
