Red Stripe coming to Main Street

Plans to open this summer.

It's official — Red Stripe, a popular American brasserie-style restaurant in Providence's East Side, is coming to Main Street in East Greenwich.

The new restaurant will take the spot of the former Caprice Restaurant and Bar at 455 Main Street and is expected to open this summer.

Red Stripe General Manager Stan Kachnowicz said the plans were approved by the East Greenwich Historic Commission last week, which paves the way for planned renovations of the building.

"Other than giving the front of the building a facelift and adding kitchen equipment, the site is ideal for our needs," he said.

The 5,000 square foot layout will accommodate up to 175 seats and a private dining area.

Sketches released on Wednesday show the building will wear Red Stripe's trademark theme of red awnings adorned with a large fork, logo and color scheme. You can probably guess one of the primary colors in the scene.

The restaurant will be open daily for dinner with brunch and late lunch on weekends. Whether the restaurant will be open for lunch during the week is still up in the air, the owners said.

If you've been to Red Stripe before, expect a familiar experience, which is relaxed and family friendly but with an upscale twist.

The food is described as "refined comfort food with a French influence," and the restaurant is particularly known for its fries, which go quite well with a slab of beef or with fresh mussels.

“Our food is reasonably priced and always made with passion,” Kachnowicz said.  “We’re excited to bring our Red Stripe experience to the neighborhood of East Greenwich.  The clientele is comparable to our Providence location where we see many of our guests out for a stroll or out shopping.  We are looking forward to hosting many meals, special gatherings and celebrations for our new friends as we welcome those from East Greenwich and the surrounding area.”
