Bronco Blowout Earns Avengers Playoff Spot

EG Football team wins against Burrillville, 48 to 0.

The Avengers hit on all cylinders Friday night in their game against the Broncos. Although Burrillville seemed to come out with some steam at the start of the game, they were no match against Av’s superior defense and EG just kept scoring, ending the game with a 48-0 blowout.

A few minutes before the end of the first quarter, EG’s Alex Cleary started off the scoring, with a running touchdown, followed by his successful extra point kick. The Av’s offense was explosive in the second quarter, with a running touchdown by Carney Crawford, followed by a short passing touchdown by Jeremy Streich. EG’s Alex Cleary intercepted a pass by Bronco quarterback Isaiah DeSilva, running in the ball for a 41-yard touchdown. EG wrapped up the half with a 60-yard passing touchdown from Andrew Miner to Kyle Palmer. Alex Cleary was successful in making all four extra point kicks, bringing the score at the half to 35-0 Avengers.

The Av’s defense held strong in the second half, with aggressive play against the Bronco offense. EG’s Pete Hunziker made a long running touchdown in the third quarter, followed by a short running play in the fourth quarter by Rayaan Faizan for a touchdown. Alex Cleary made one of the extra point kicks in the second half, giving the Avengers that 48-0 win over the Broncos.

In recapping the game, EG quarterback Andrew Miner said everything “really worked today, our defense played great and we’ve got a lot of great players on this team.”

Coach John George said the win against the Broncos was exactly what the team needed to get back on track after last weekend's first loss of the season against Middletown.

Looking ahead, the Avengers play their last game of the regular season against the Narragansett Mariners for their traditional Thanksgiving Day game.

“This is a big rivalry game and we want to win,” said Miner. Coach George said that Narragansett will likely be reaching for a playoff spot “so they are going to be playing really hard," adding they are a “tough team." He said the Avengers have clinched a Division III playoff spot and the team is looking for a “good hard challenge as we head into the playoffs.”

Before sitting down for Thanksgiving dinner, cheer on the Avengers when they travel to Narragansett to wrap up their regular season Thursday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. Post-season play begins Tuesday, Nov, 27, at 6 p.m. when EG plays Moses Brown in the Division III semifinals at home on Carcieri Field.
