Avengers Outstrip Skippers, 34-20; Still Undefeated

EG football team continues winning season with 34-20 win over North Kingstown Friday night.

With four games left in the regular season, the EGHS Avenger football team remains undefeated after their victory Friday night against the North Kingstown Skippers. Cheered on by a large crowd of EG fans, the EGHS football team improved its record to 4:0 within the division and 6:0 overall.

Just over a minute into the game, EG’s Andrew Miner through an interception, which was run in for a touchdown by NK’s Alex Burke. It took to near the end of the first quarter for the Avengers to come back with a successful touchdown run by Alex Cleary to tie the game at 6-6. Momentum continued with the Skippers in the second quarter, with touchdowns scored by Nick Chevalier and Alex Burke, as well as a successful two-point conversion. With just over two minutes left in the half, EG came back with another touchdown run by Alex Cleary as well as a successful conversion kick, leaving the Skippers with a 20-13 lead going into halftime.

The Avengers dominated in the second half with strong offensive and defensive play. Jeremy Streich scored on a pass from Andrew Miner, followed by back-to-back running touchdowns by Carney Crawford. Alex Cleary made all three extra point kicks, resulting in a final score of 34 Avengers, 20 Skippers.

“We played a little sloppy in the first half and it showed,” EG's Miner said after the game. Going into the second quarter, he said, the team made adjustments in running and blocking plays, which “really worked well for us.”

The Avengers have a week off and don’t play again until Oct. 27, when they travel to Classical, a team that shut out the Avengers 37-0 when they last met.  According to Miner, the break is coming at a good time for the team.

“We’re very bumped and bruised right now.”

The Avengers next travel to Classical High School in Providence on Saturday, Oct. 27, for a noon game. Schedules are posted at www.riil.org
