Boys, Girls Lacrosse Pass First Playoff Tests

The boys trounce Cumberland 13-1 Thursday and the girls beat Bay View for the second time in nine days, 15-13.

The boys and girls lacrosse teams played simultaneously Thursday night, the boys at Cumberland and the girls versus Bay View at home, and both came up with big wins (13-1 and 15-13, respectively) to move them into the next round of the playoffs.

The boys took their A+ game to Cumberland.

“Everyone played their best game of the year,” said assistant coach Bruce Roberts via email. “Our attack filled the net with a very disciplined offense, our mid-field was terrific, and our defense kept Cumberland away from the goal for the majority of the game.”

He called goalie Dante Granatiero the “star of the evening,” for stopping “dozens of shots from every direction for the entire game.”

They will play Middletown in the semi-finals next week. The teams met twice in the regular season, each winning at home.

Girls lax

EG beat Bay View for the second time in nine days on Thursday. The earlier game was won literally in the final seconds, with a goal by senior Kiley Powers with three seconds left to play. That close finish set up the start to Thursday’s game, according to EG’s coach, Judy Davis.

“They came out very strong in the beginning - they wanted to prove they were in this thing,” said Davis. Bay View led the entire first half. But EG came up with the goods when it counted.

“It’s a game of momentum and we established the momentum at the right time in the second half and we were able to get a little more aggressive and a little more ball control,” she said.

Co-captian Powers had six goals and three assists. “She’s a very smart player and she knows what she can do,” Davis said. “She was a key factor.”

In addition, she said, “our goalie Emily Raposa made some major saves at the end of the game.”

Another standout during the game was co-captian Sam Regini, a senior. “She just made some outstanding plays,” said Davis, “taking possession and not allowing them to score.”
The girls lax team will play number one seed Barrington on Wednesday at Rhode Island College.

“Yeah, they’re good, they’re undefeated,” conceded Davis. EG lost to Barrington earlier in the season, but Davis said that was over April vacation when the team was down a few players.

“They will see a different team this time.”
