EG LAX Are D-II Champs
Freshman, sophomores step up to help team grab its fourth championship in a row.
The East Greenwich High School lacrosse team could be considered a dynasty by now.
The team, facing South Kingstown in the title game for a third straight year, took home the Division II championship in a solid 14-6 win over the Rebels at Brown's Stevenson Field recently.
Coach Brian Trapani told the Providence Journal that the team's victory was due in a large part to the work of the freshman and sophomores, who inherited a big task after 15 seniors left at the end of last season.
"We had to quickly turn into a varsity-level team and train the sophomores to play like juniors," he said.
Here's the scoring from the final game:
EAST GREENWICH (14): Ross Trinque 3, Paul Dunwoody, Jack Feeney 3, Chris Wright, Sam Feinberg, Brendan Jordan 5; assists — Trinque 2, Joseph Madden 3, Feinberg 4, Jordan. SOUTH KINGSTOWN (6): Nate Eastman, Sam Smith, Zach Walker, Jeremy Awe, Chad Mitchell; assists — Nick Zaroogian, Mitchell.
Halftime — EG, 10-5. Saves — Mitchell Gemma, EG, 15; Benny Hayes, EG, 2; Matthew Cauchon, SK, 6.
