Saturday’s victory over the Lincoln Lions keeps the Avenger football team at the top spot in Division III, tied with Middletown at 3-0 division, 4-0 overall.
Going into the game, the team’s goal was to shutout Lincoln, according to quarterback Andrew Miner. “This was a great win all around and we played great, consistent football,” he said.
The first quarter resulted in two touchdowns, one by Alex Cleary coupled with a quarterback sneak from Andrew Miner. Alex Cleary made one of the extra point kicks resulting in a 13-0 lead going into the second quarter. Defense continued strong, holding back the Lions, while offense put another 7 points on the board with a second quarterback sneak followed by an extra point by Cleary, giving EG a 20-0. With minutes left in the first half, Cleary intercepted a Lion pass but the Avengers were unable to score before the half was called.
During the half-time ceremonies, the 2012 Homecoming representatives and court were presented to the hometown crowd. Senior Roxanne Comito, escorted by Connor Finn, was crowned homecoming queen.
Things continued to click for the Avengers in the second half. Running back Carney Crawford brought in another touchdown in the third quarter. Momentum continued with the Avengers through the fourth quarter, when Kyle Palmer intercepted a Lions pass that he successfully ran in for a touchdown, followed by a successful extra point kick by Cleary. The Avengers walked away with a 40-0 shutout, a dramatic reversal of last year’s 20-0 loss to the Lions.
Coach John George noted this season has had the best start ofny since he began coaching the team in 2010. “We were young last year and took it on the chin a few times, but the kids grew up, have gotten better, and that makes a big difference.”
Looking ahead, the Avengers next face Moses Brown. Miner noted that Moses Brown will be a good test as they “have a good quarterback and are always well coached.”
Coach George agreed, saying EG will need to eliminate mistakes. "They will be a real challenge for us," he said.
The EGHS Avengers will travel to Moses Brown on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team.
