Weekly Sports Roundup

Baseball: The Avenger baseball team started off the week strong once again with a shutout victory over Chariho as Chris Pogue pitched a complete game shutout and David Hopkins chipped in with a triple and scored run to lead the Avs to a 2-0 win. The team then traveled to Portsmouth on Wednesday and was winning the game 4-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Portsmouth Patriots knocked in 7 runs and then 3 more runs in the sixth inning to end up winning 10-4.

The against divisional rival South Kingstown on Thursday in their third road game of the week. John Kalajian pitched the majority of the game to gain another win to his record and Jeremy Streich opened up the game right from the first inning by crushing a grand slam home run. The Avengers ended up dominating the Rebels 9-1 and are now 13-3 on the season.

Fastpitch Softball: The softball team continued its winning ways earlier in the week with a 5-0 victory over North Smithfield. Mollie Anderson pitched another complete game shutout win while only allowing two hits on the day. On the offensive end, Karen Lockhart contributed with two hits and three RBIs. The Avengers then competed at Pilgrim and were leading the entire game until the bottom of the sixth when Pilgrim scored 5 runs to win the game 8-6. After that close loss the Avengers are 11-2.

Boys Lacrosse: This week the boys lax squad was winless but their first game was very close as they lost in the final minutes against Prout, 6-5. Kyle Carosotto and Luc Stralka each had two goals on the day. On Thursday the Avengers played at home under the lights against SK but ended up trailing early on in the game and could not catch up to the Rebels, loosing by a score of 11-6. The boys lacrosse team is now 6-6 on the season.

Girls Lacrosse: On Tuesday the girls lacrosse team opened up the week at home against North Kingstown. The first half was high scoring for both teams but the Avs were trailing the Skippers 8-6. In the second half, both teams showcased their great defense with only three goals scored in the half but EG just could not edge NK losing 10-7. The Avengers bounced back from the tough loss on Thursday at Prout. Although the high scoring game was close the Avengers were winning the entire game and gained another victory by a score of 15-12; Kiley Powers scored six goals and had two assists to lead the team. The girls lax team is now 8-3 on the year.

Golf: The Avenger golfers easily beat both Warwick Vets and Cranston East during a match on Monday at the par 35 Cranston Country Club. Brad Lockhart had the best score of the day with a 39, Chris Gallogly had the second best with a 41, and Jason Peduto and Alex Krauss tied for third by both shooting a 45. The EG golf team went back to Cranston CC on Wednesday teeing off against Cranston West and West Warwick. Although all four of EG's best golfers improved their score from earlier in the week on the same course they still lost by two strokes Cranston West but gained a win over West Warwick.

Tennis: The boys tennis team is still undefeated at 13-0 after another week of matches. On Tuesday they swept Chariho winning all seven of their games. Then on Thursday the Avengers accomplished another sweep over Pilgrim. The tennis team sits at the top of Division 2-South with their undefeated record.

Volleyball: The boys volleyball team opened up the week with a 3-0 win at Westerly. Middle blocker Matt Denci led the Avengers with ten kills, five aces and three digs and Eli Brown added 25 assists. They then finished off their week with another sweep over West Warwick while Dan Shawver had 13 kills. The Avengers are now 7-4 on the season.

Boys Outdoor Track and Field: The boys track team started off the week with their division championships meet at South Kingstown and came in sixth place but the Avenger runners competed well in all the individual events. Dylan Manning placed second in the 400, Dillon Danforth sprinted to fourth place in the 200, Chris Millman got fourth in the 1500, and Scott Kulm raced to fourth place in the 3K. Then on Saturday the Avengers competed in the Classical Classic in the small school division. During that meet the 4 by 800 team earned second place, Dillon Danforth won the 200 meter race, and Scott Kulm got second place in the 3K. 

Girls Outdoor Track and Field: The girls track team also competed in their division championships this week and tied for third place in the Southern division with Chariho. The 4 by 1 and 4 by 4 teams made up of Skylar Leblanc, Mikayla Baiocchi, Jaimee Dorsey, and Renee Perelman came in first in both of their relay races, Jaimee Dorsey won the 100 and 200 meter sprints, Rachel Basso came in first in the javelin throw, Renee Perelman also came in second place in the 400, Cara Nunez placed second in the intermediate hurdles, Eddye Golden came in 6th in the high jump, and Allison Davis came in sixth place in the 800.
