Yankee Steam-Up Heats Things Up on Saturday

Steam engines, preschool fundraiser, chamber music & more

It’s Thursday, you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. For your convenience, Patch is coming to the rescue with the best bets for how to spend your free time. Check out our picks for the local activities to hit and places to explore.

1.

Start your engines and head on over to the annual event that’s all about steam engines, old gas engines, antique cars and motorcycles, launches, tractors and other farm machinery. Come and look, or bring something of your own to rev up.

Dedicated to model engine makers, engineers, historians, students and people who care about ingenious mechanisms and their remarkable Yankee builders, the show offers two model tables, one with pressure-regulated compressed air and the other with steam in full operation.                         

In addition, giant 12-foot, 14-foot, and 15-foot flywheel historic engines will run, plus dozens of gas engines.

There’s no charge for registered exhibitors, but you’ll need to contact the museum to let them know what you’re bringing at 401-885-0545 or newsm@newsm.org.

The event happens rain or shine, and there’s plenty of free parking and refreshments on site.

Why Go: It’s, literally, a good place to go blow off some steam!

Where/When: Besos Tea House, 378 Main Street; Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m.

Why Go: The night’s mission is to help raise awareness and generate funds for the Learning Center. Enjoy live and silent auctions with prizes including a weekend trip for two at a New York City apartment, a half-day fishing trip on Narragansett Bay, and a fine wine tasting by the Savory Grape, accompanied by an assortment of gourmet hors d’oeuvres provided by Besos Tea House.

Where/When: Toll Gate High School, 575 Centerville Rd., Warwick, RI; Saturday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: It’s your last chance to catch the R.I. musicians who make a special trip home for the annual festival until next spring.

Why Go: The Avengers play the Middletown Islanders this week.

Where/When: ; Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Back after a weekend off for the Hound Hike, here’syour chance to give a pet a good home and have a friend to walk at next year’s hike.
