Jack White settles on Child Support with his Ex

On behalf of Law Office of Steven J. Hirsch, Esq. posted in Child Support on Thursday, December 19, 2013.

Contrary to common perception, child support covers a wide array of costs -- not just the basic necessities. Although monthly payments do help to cover food, clothing and shelter, child support also covers other, less basic needs, such as entertainment, schooling, medical and other fees. In order to determine how much support is owed by the non-custodial parent, courts take into consideration a number of factors, including the RI Child Support Guidelines, the needs of the child and the monthly earnings of both parents.

Rhode Island residents may be surprised to learn of how much famous rock musician Jack White owes in child support -- especially given his monthly income. Jack White and his wife Karen Elson, a model/singer, who he married in 2005, decided to split recently. Karen was designated as the primary residential parent of their 6-year-old and 7-year-old children.

As the non-custodial parent, Jack White will owe child support -- $3,200 a month, to be exact. Some might find this surprising, considering the fact that White earns $62,000 a month. Surprising as it may be, there are other factors that go into a support arrangement, and, perhaps, the fact that White has custody of the children 150 days a year was factored into the arrangement.

The first element that gets factored into a child supportarrangement the federally mandated Guidelines.  The RI Guidelines, revised every few years, are determined by an economist taking into account the costs of living in Rhode Island (including food, shelter, clothing and the costs that it takes for an average family in that income level to raise a child).  Next may be the child's extra ordinary needs. Then, the unusual but reasonable needs of both parents may be considered. And also, the standard of living the child had prior to the divorce is often considered. For anyone in the process of calculating child support costs, or trying to get already established arrangements modified, there are strategies to determine the best arrangement for everyone involved.
