As the sun rises on another Independence Day — you remember what the sun is, right? — most folks have their plans already set.

Near East Greenwich, the Lafayette Band is scheduled to take the stage at North Kingstown Town Beach starting at 7 pm tonight, with fireworks set for 9.

If you're planning to travel, here's the low-down on some of the biggest 4th of July events around Rhode Island. Click each link for more information.

  • Bristol: Leave early and plan to stay for the long haul if you're driving over the I-Way to Bristol. The 228th Bristol 4th of July parade steps off at 10:30 am. Parking bans go into effect at 8 am.
  • Newport: From the bicycle parade at 9:45 am to the cannon salute at noon, there's plenty happening in the City by the Sea. There's also a special BBQ on Rose Island leading up to the city's fireworks display.
  • Coventry: The annual show on Johnson's Pond is scheduled for July 4 at 9:30 pm. If you go, make a donation to the organizers so they can continue the tradition.
  • Smithfield: Bryant University hosts one of the last Independence Day Weekend celebrations on July 7 from 7 to 9:45 pm. The Northeast Navy Band performs before the fireworks show.
